White House wants to deliver food to the poor, Blue Apron-style

In an effort to reform the nation's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the White House is suggesting that low-income families receive an "America's Harvest Box" of nonperishable foods each month to replace about half of the money they now receive through food stamps.

Under the proposed plan, the box would replace the monthly cash benefits placed on an EBT card for almost half of those on food stamps nationwide, affecting anyone who receives at least $90 a month in food stamps.

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney described the program, which would hand out food boxes to recipients who get a $90 or greater food benefit per month, invoking the popular mail-order meal business.

Comparing the new proposal to Blue Apron, an American ingredient-and-recipe meal kit service, founded in 2012, the delivered food boxes would include "shelf-stable" items such as juice, pasta, ready to eat cereal, canned meat, pasta, peanut butter and beans.

Under the government's current program, food stamp recipients use a payment card, similar to a debit card, to buy food, and the USDA has strict rules about what can be bought with the benefits. "The boxes also will not contain any fresh fruit or vegetables". "These budget proposals for SNAP are the wrong way to go to provide healthy, safe, affordable food for all".

If you receive money from food stamps, a proposal from the government would switch part of that benefit from dollars to non-perishable food.

Sonny Perdue, the agriculture secretary, called the new proposal a "bold, innovative approach", noting that the food placed in the box would be grown by American farmers and producers.

'It lowers the cost to us because we can buy prices at wholesale, whereas they have to buy it at retail.

In a nutshell, the program would reduce government over-spending and mismanagement while ensuring people used the funds for their "Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program" for foods that would truly supplement nutrition. Equally unclear is whether USDA would allot the same foods to, say, an elderly diabetic and a family with young children.

Trump's base was mostly comprised of poor Whites. It's called "America's Harvest Box". The food bank says they would feel the immediate domino effect of this cut.

Knott also said that the program is created to help vulnerable populations like veterans returning from combat or seasonal workers who would lose benefits if they aren't working for several months.

Except SNAP is one of the most efficient government programs, with some of the lowest numbers for misuse.
