Pirates trade pitcher Gerrit Cole to Astros

The Yankees miss out on righthander Gerrit Cole.

The Pirates reached an agreement Wednesday to trade Cole to the Astros for an undisclosed package, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.

"We have talked to several teams about possible trades", Luhnow told the Houston Chronicle. This trade increases Cole's upside in the wins department, but the move to the American League may offset those potential gains. He finished with a career-worst 4.26 ERA in 2017 and career-worst 1.44 WHIP in 2016. The former All-Star's best season came back in 2015 when he posted a 19-8 record with a 2.60 ERA en route to finishing in the top five in Cy Young voting. Darvish is the free agent starter Houston has been mentioned alongside the most, and there are only so many "high-end" pitchers on the free agent market.

If the trade does goes through, the trade would bolster an already-stacked rotation in Houston that includes two-time Cy Young award-winner Justin Verlander and 2015 victor Dallas Keuchel.

Right now the Yankees have Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray, CC Sabathia and Jordan Montgomery in their rotation.
