Mariah Carey performs during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve at Times Square on December 31, 2017 in New York City. It appears that pre-show soundcheck worked. And judging by the look on her face as the performance came to a close this year as opposed to last, no technical difficulties got in the way this time around.
"They told me there would be tea", Carey explained to the crowd, who braved arctic tempertures that plunged into the single digits in New York's Times Square. "Oh, it's a disaster". Well, we'll just have to rough it. "I'm gonna be like everybody else with no hot tea".
The plan is for Mariah to somehow get from the stage to the area where the ball drops so she can countdown the New Year with Ryan Seacrest.
2018 is off to quite a start.
Carey told the audience, "I was told there would be tea".

"Oh, I'm feeling a lot better than past year, when I had to get my own police escort to walk away", Carey said, after Seacrest asked how she was feeling.

Whether or not Carey will be able to prove she has the chops she says she does or not remains to be seen, but we can bet it something spectacular, one way or another, will be seen and by millions and millions of people.
The singer then launched into her 1993 ballad Hero with backup singers in white robes behind her. Some critics complained because Mariah didn't hit her signature high notes, but we can safely assume that was because she didn't have enough hot tea to lubricate her vocal cords.
The singer showed just a hint of her diva reputation after her first song.
