The governing council also hiked the salary budget of the franchises from Rs 66 crore to Rs 80 crore for the next year's auction, tentatively set for February. At least 75 percent of the salary cap will have to be spent during each season.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) was the other IPL team to be banned for the same duration after the betting ring was busted.

However, the five players combinations have been limited to a maximum of three capped Indian players and a maximum of two each of overseas and uncapped players.

In case of uncapped players, the salary cap will be Rs 3 crore per player. CSK will have to primarily choose between R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina or a foreign player such as Dwayne Bravo in whom the Chennai team continues to have faith. Following the suspension of the franchise for two years, Dhoni captained the Rising Pune Supergiant in the 2016 Indian Premier League and was part of the squad that entered the final in the previous edition, which they lost by one run to Mumbai Indians. On the player retention, if a team chooses to retain three players, a total of Rs 33 crore will be deducted from its auction purse (Rs 15 crore, Rs 11 crore and Rs 7 crore, for three players, respectively).

If the franchise retains one player: The cost of the player will be 12.5 crores INR. The BCCI has eliminated the "soft cap" concept wherein teams were previously permitted to have private deal with players on their fee.
