As Cyclone Ockhi moves closer to Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi cancels rallies

BJP leader Amit Shah's poll rallies scheduled on Tuesday in Rajula town of Amreli and Mahuva and Shihor of Bhavnagar district were cancelled, as were Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's rallies in Morbi, Dhrangadhra and Surendranagar.

"We have issued high alert in all coastal districts and taken all precautionary measures", Gujarat's Principal Secretary (Revenue) told media persons in Gandhinagar after Chief Secretary J.N. Singh held a review meeting with the top officials.

According to the Special Weather Forecast Bulletin issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, the movement of the cyclonic depression over parts of Gujarat might be accompanied by a wet spell over the next three-four days, the EC noted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said he is constantly monitoring the situation in various states arising out of cyclone Ockhi battering parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep islands and now heading towards Gujarat.

The cyclone is expected to hit the state's coastal area in Surat city on Tuesday midnight. "All possible assistance is being provided to those affected", he tweeted.

It has been raining in Mumbai's Andheri since morning, reported ANI. It also advised fishermen to not venture into the sea along and off South Gujarat and north Maharashtra coasts during next 24 hours as the sea condition is expected to be very rough. Not only this, strong surface winds will prevail over the region with wind speed ranging between 40-50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph.
