Conyers said in the interview that this in no way will tarnish his legacy. Grubbs is the cousin of another accuser, Marion Brown, who reached a confidential settlement with Conyers over sexual harassment allegations, but broke the confidentiality agreement to speak publicly last week.

The revelations against Conyers came amid a flurry of allegations of sexual misconduct against several of his colleagues in both the House and Senate, including Reps.

Conyers is one of four sitting USA lawmakers hit by allegations of sexual misconduct in the wake of the claims targeting movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, which triggered a torrent of accusations against powerful figures in the worlds of entertainment, media and politics.

Conyers" attorney Arnold Reed told the Detroit Free Press the new allegations from Grubbs are "another instance of tomfoolery from the mouth of Harvey Weinstein's attorney'.

"My legacy can't be compromised, or diminished in any way by what we are going through now", Conyers said.

"It was sexual harassment, violating my body, propositioning me, inviting me to hotels with the guise of discussing business and then propositioning me for sex", Brown told NBC.

The NYT also reports that Ian plans to run for the seat. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan also called on Conyers to resign.

Until Tuesday, Conyers held the distinction as the longest serving current member of the U.S. House of Representatives. "This too shall pass", he said, speaking on the Mildred Gaddis Show.

While Conyers maintains he would be retiring immediately, CBS News' Steve Chaggaris reports that Conyers' resignation from the House will trigger a special election to replace him to be called by the governor, per MI law.

His lawyer earlier said on Twitter that Conyers would make an announcement at 10:15 a.m. When sexual-misconduct allegations surface in the private sector, a boss really can say "You're fired" - as Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose and others can attest.

Conyers' family say the veteran lawmaker is suffering from stress-related illness. In the political world, it's never that simple.

BuzzFeed was the first news outlet to report last week about a settlement Conyers made with a former staffer who had accused him of sexual misconduct. Conyers has denied all the allegations, and on Tuesday, wrote the accusations off as "politics".

A number of fellow Democrats have called on Conyers to resign, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and fellow Michigan Rep. Dan Kildee.

Congress has been reviewing policies on how to handle sexual harassment complaints after a string of cases involving prominent figures in the US media, Hollywood and politics.

Conyers has already stepped down from his leadership position as ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee late last month.
