The NCRB report also first time included the statistics on the seizures of arms, ammunitions, drugs and currency by central armed police forces - the CISF, the BSF, the CRPF, the SSB, the Assam Rifles - and central police organisations like the National Investigation Agency.
Uttar Pradesh continued to top the crime charts with 9.5% of the total crimes committed in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.9%), Maharashtra (8.8%) and Kerala (8.7%). The state also ranked second in economic offences and cyber crime. Bengaluru topped the list for cyber crimes for the last two years.

Delhi registered 40 per cent (1,996) of the total number of rape cases in the 19 cities and almost 29 per cent cases each of cruelty meted out by husband and his relatives and dowry deaths across the country.
The national database on crime says that in 2016 Orissa reported 8,252 cases (crime rate 39.1) of assault on women with intent to outrage their modesty. Crimes against children are a cause of concern.

The national capital is followed by Mumbai, which recorded 12.3 per cent or 5,128 criminal cases against women. As many as 1,847 cases of crime against children cases were reported in the State in 2016, including 54 murders.
If one took corrected figures for the past years as well, 2016 would in fact reflect an increase of about 2.6 per cent in overall crimes. As for murder, Delhi registered 479 out of a total of 2,194 cases or 21.8 per cent followed by Bengaluru at 229 cases or 10.4 per cent and Patna at 195 cases or 8.9 per cent. Delhi accounted for 38.8 per cent of total IPC cases, followed by Bengaluru (8.9 per cent) and Mumbai (7.7 per cent). Mumbai also had the second highest number of rape cases, at 712 cases, after Delhi that had 1,996 cases.
A total of 1,11,569 children (41,175 males and 70,394 females) were reported missing in which maximum children missing were reported from West Bengal (15.1%) during 2016. For other offences, such as traffic challans, NCRB will provide separate data from next year. Orissa is reportedly third in this category after Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
According to the report for 2016, covering 19 cities with a population above two million, Delhi reported 33 per cent (13,803 cases of 41,761) of crimes against women previous year.
Cases of cyber crime, rape, crime against woman, crime against children, kidnapping and abduction, crime against Scheduled Castes (SCs)/Scheduled Tribes (STs) showed an increasing trend while cases of murder, rioting, robbery and dacoity decreased in 2016, said the NCRB report.
