A U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon surveillance plane, like the one pictured above, had an unsafe encounter with a Russian SU-30 fighter jet while flying over the Black Sea on Saturday, the Pentagon said.

The unprofessional behavior demonstrated by the Russian pilot was clearly intentional, according to US officials.

USA and Russian aircraft often have encounters in the region, some of which the United States has slammed as unsafe and/or unprofessional.

However the Russian jet crossed in front of the U.S. plane from right to left, the Pentagon told CNN, engaging its afterburners, thereby prompting the U.S. Poseidon to spanner into "a 15-degree roll and violent turbulence".

Also speaking to state news agency RIA Novosti, the retired deputy commander of Russia's air force, Nikolay Antoshkin, dismissed the USA reaction.

The Russian fighter jet buzzed the US Navy reconnaissance plane at around 1pm local time (10:00 GMT) as it was flying over the neutral waters of the Black Sea, the ministry said.

A Su-30 fighter took off, approached the air target and identified it as a US aircraft P-8A Poseidon, it said. A spokesperson at the US Air Force said in a statement at the time that, "there are worldwide standards to ensure safety and prevent incidents".

The U.S. P-8A Poseidon did nothing to provoke the maneuver, defense spokesperson Michelle Baldanza said.
