A civil society activist, Nargis, said efforts made for elimination of violence against women during the past one decade had produced no considerable results.

Each year on November 25 the world marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, while for the next 16 days, from November 25 through to December 10 (Human Rights Day), the world will mark 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence to raise public awareness and mobilise people all over the world to bring about change.

Close to seven years since the start of the crisis, sexual violence and other forms of gender-based violence continues to remain a major source of concern in the daily lives of women, men, girls and boys across Syria; with women and girls reporting being in fear of sexual violence, often associated with abduction. In 2012, nearly half of all women who were victims of intentional homicide worldwide were killed by an intimate partner or family member, compared to six percent of male victims.

He called on men to speak up on women's rights, stand against violence and promote female leadership in all aspects of society.

This is considered urgent because at least one of every three women aged 15 to 49 in Latin America and the Caribbean have experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner, according to Alessandra Guedes, PAHO's Regional Advisor on Family Violence.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said, "Unions are leading the way in eradicating violence against women at work, and the support of a strong global legal instrument is essential".

PAHO has intensified its cooperation with countries to prevent violence against women and children, developing tools, strengthening networks and coalitions, building capacities in the countries, and improving the availability of data.
