Brazilian football star Robinho sentenced to jail for sexual assault

Former Manchester City and Brazil star striker, Robinho has been sentenced to 9 years in jail for sexual assault, according to a report by Sky News.

Under the Italian law, the forward will not be sent to prison until the appeals process is finalised, which could take years.

Robinho, who was part of the Milan squad at the time, had strenuously denied the charges. Robinho affirms that he had nothing to do with the incident referred to.

Robinho had previously been accused of sexual assault during his City days, but was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing.

The 2014 statement also made reference to the earlier claim and suggested it was being used "in an opportunistic manner" with regard to the alleged incident in Milan.

Robinho, who now plays for Athletico Mineiro in his homeland, has been capped 100 times as an worldwide player for Brazil, also having become the Premier League's most expensive star when he signed for Man City in 2008 for £32.5m. Brazil does not extradite its own citizens when they are sentenced in other countries.

Robinho, whose full name is Robson de Souza, is now in Brazil, where he plays for Atletico Mineiro.

"All legal steps are already being taken in response to this decision".

He broke the British transfer record in 2008 when Man City lured him from Real Madrid for £32 million (A$40 million).

Robinho began his career with Santos before leaving Brazil in 2005 for a three-year spell with Madrid.
