PM Modi condoles demise of Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi

President Praful Patel led the football fraternity in condoling the demise of his predecessor and veteran Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who passed away at the Apollo Hospital here on Monday.

Media reports quoted the hospital as saying that Dasmunsi had developed chest infection last month and had been in a critical condition for the past one month.

Dasmunsi is survived by his wife Deepa and son Priyadeep who were at his bedside at the time of his passing.

It was reported that the former Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was in the coma since 2008 dies in New Delhi on Monday.

The news was confirmed by West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. "His death is an irreparable loss to the Congress party and the country", she said. Besides, he was the president of All India Football Federation for nearly 20 years.

She said that the enormous work of Dasmunsi would be remembered for posterity and remained popular in the imagination of his people despite his prolonged illness.

He was admitted to Calcutta's Apollo Gleneagles hospital where he underwent angioplasty to unblock two blood vessels.

Dasmunsi, was also the state President of Indian Youth Congress in West Bengal from 1970 to 1971.

Sonia expressed solidarity with the leader's family, particularly his wife Deepa Dasmunsi, and supporters.

Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was the Union Minister in 1985. A West Bengal strongman, he represented Raiganj from 1999 till he fell ill.

The Congress leader had suffered a brain stroke in 2008 and was admitted to AIIMS. Otherwise he could have done more in his political life.

He was the cabinet minister in Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during the first term of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. She is now representing Raiganj constituency in the parliament.
