Two injured in Mall of America stabbing, suspect in custody

Police have named the man accused of stabbing two people inside the Mall of America during a botched theft attempt Sunday.

Kim Schwieters told the newspaper she saw armed police running into the department store and her daughter spotted people lying on the ground before police told shoppers to clear the area. When the police arrived, they learned the stabbing began after a theft was interrupted.

The incident reportedly occurred in the men's department of Macy's shortly after 6.45pm local time in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Officials took Mahad Abdiaziz Abdirahaman, 20, of Minneapolis into custody and charged him with two counts of first-degree assault, CBS Minnesota reports. Police say one victim was stabbed after they confronted a man who was trying to steal their belongings. Another man in his party responded to the victim's cries for help and was also stabbed, Potts said. One man was taken into custody.
