Deadly church shooting in Texas

More than 20 people have been killed in a shooting that took place inside of a Wilson County church during Sunday service, just 40 miles southeast of San Antonio.

Details are still unclear. The shooter has been taken down, the sheriff said.

Local authorities have yet to confirm how many were killed or injured, but Wilson County Commissioner Albert Gamez Jr. told the Washington Post that at least 27 were killed and more than 20 were injured.

Another local official who wished to remain anonymous said there are at least 25 dead and 15 wounded.

The Connally Memorial Medical Center in nearby Floresville, Texas, is "accepting and assessing victims" from the Sutherland Springs church shooting, according to hospital spokeswoman Megan Posey. He added that he is "monitoring the situation from Japan".

Trump tweeted: "May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas".

Abbot is en route to Sutherland Springs to speak with law enforcement and the victims.

The gunman was identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, according to a CBS News law enforcement source.

Joseph Silva, 49, who lives about seven kilometres northeast of Sutherland Springs, said the police had instructed his family and neighbors to stay indoors.

The teenaged daughter of the pastor of the Texan church where a gunman shot dead more than 20 people is among the dead. Other reports indicate more than a dozen people were shot, but there has been no report on any deaths.

There are reports emerging from Texas of a mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs.

Pictures and video on social media show a large police and paramedic presence.

Emergency officials are on scene and updated reports are expected.
