Trump says recalls little about meeting where aide mentioned Russian Federation

The backdrop: The news comes as Sessions is already under scrutiny over a report that he "shut down" a request from George Papadopoulos, another campaign foreign policy adviser, to arrange a meeting between campaign officials and Vladimir Putin.

Mueller's investigators on Monday arrested Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager, and former business associate Richard Gates, on a 12-count indictment charging them with conspiracy and money laundering. "Completely unrelated to my limited volunteer role with the campaign and as I've done dozens of times throughout my life".

During a hearing last month, Franken pressed Sessions to clarify the testimony during his initial confirmation process.

Sessions' failure to disclose those meetings ultimately led to his recusal from the Justice Department's Russian Federation investigation, and functioned as one of the many missteps that triggered the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller. News that he had mentioned the visit to Attorney General Jeff Sessions drew headlines, as it complicated Sessions' claims that he did not know about the Trump campaign's Russian Federation contacts.

Asked about a 2016 meeting that included former adviser George Papadopoulos, Trump told reporters: "I don't remember much about that meeting".

Sessions is also under pressure from his boss, who has made clear he thinks the Department of Justice should look into his former presidential rival, Hillary Clinton, and her campaign's behavior with the Democratic National Committee during the presidential primary race.

"The attorney general has been entirely truthful and consistent on this matter", the source said, referring to Sessions' testimony before Congress where he rejected the notion of meetings and interactions with Russians during the campaign season. He also testified that he was "not aware" of anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicating with the Russians.

"Ultimately, whether or not he committed perjury, will be again, I believe, Bob Mueller's call", Franken said.

During a news conference in February, Trump said he knew of nobody from his campaign who was in contact with Russians during the election.

"Which is why it's such a mystery why George Papadopoulos... would lie to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his meetings with Russians when they weren't illegal".

Papadopoulos told Mueller that not only was Sessions at the meeting on March 31, 2016, he opposed the idea that Trump sit down with Papadopoulos' contacts. "There were questions that elicited exactly the kind of information that the Papadopoulos plea agreement made".

Franken added, "This is another example in an alarming pattern in which you, the nation's top law enforcement officer, apparently failed to tell the truth, under oath, about the Trump team's contacts with agents of Russia-a hostile foreign power that interfered in the 2016 election".
