Sony Restructures AI Robot Dog

The developers of the new model of robot-dog said that in honor of the previous models, the novelty will receive the name Aibo, and among the innovations there is a constant Internet connection and smart control electronic devices in the house.

Shares in Sony soared to a nine-year high on Wednesday after it forecast record earnings that have vindicated its restructuring efforts and raised expectations of sustained momentum in profitability. The eyes of the AI is made up of OLED displays to enable the pet show diverse expressions.

"It was a hard decision to stop the project in 2006, but we continued development in AI and robotics", Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai said at a news briefing.

Aibo will go on sale in January for 198,000 yen (£1,306) in Japan, with foreign sales being evaluated.

The biggest change to aibo is that the new iteration will be more intelligent and proactively interact with its owner. 150,000 dogs were sold in Japan before production came to a halt in 2006, due to mounting price pressure from regional rivals. Aside from AIBO, Sony has released Koov early this year, an AI that can help teach children coding through building and programming robots using plastic blocks.

To develop new profit drivers, the firm has also boosted investment in artificial intelligence and is expanding its consumer products portfolio. Sony hasn't announced a launch date for the USA market yet. AI start up called Cogitai that focuses on technology allowing machines to learn autonomously and continually from interaction in the real world. It also established a venture capital fund to build partnerships with researchers and start-up companies in AI and robotics.
