The 26-year-old was drafted by the Panthers 28th overall in the 2014 draft where Beane was the director of football operations.

Newton, already suffering from inconsistent play this season, now will rely on third-year pro Devin Funchess and rookie Curtis Samuel to carry the receiving load as the Panthers chase the Saints in the NFC South. Carolina, at 5-3, is a surprising trade-deadline seller, and linebacker Thomas Davis didn't seem thrilled. The Bills leading receiver before this trade was tight end Charles Clay with 258 yards. Benjamin immediately upgrades the receiving corp of for a team who shipped Sammy Watkins away prior to the start of the season. He is one of many talented receivers who were selected in the first round of that year's draft.

Bills receivers now rank last in the league in receptions (45) and receiving yards (594). That completed Florida State's flawless 14-0 season. That same season, the Panthers reached the Super Bowl but lost to Von Miller and the Denver Broncos.

Melgar's superiors in Germany suspected foul play and immediately sent an investigator to the scene, the newspaper reported. The case was handed off last month to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service but no one has been charged as yet.

The trade is a bit more puzzling for the Panthers. This could be a move the Panthers made looking toward the future, or they felt the Benjamin project wasn't working. When Benjamin is on his game, he is one of the best jump ball receivers in the league.

Benjamin now enters a situation in Buffalo where he could quickly become the top receiving option in a similar offensive scheme with a mobile quarterback in Tyrod Taylor. After all, Carolina still needs to get their offense going.
