Mueller Investigation Brings Down A Top Democratic Lobbyist

On Monday, Fox News host Tucker Carlson said Tony Podesta's lawyer Geoff Garinther with Venable LLP, demanded the show "immediately cease and desist disseminating false and misleading reports about Mr. Podesta and the Podesta Group".

Over the course of several years, the ECMU paid the Podesta Group $1.13 million to lobby Congress, according to the AP.

Before becoming a lobbyist, he worked on presidential campaigns of Eugene McCarthy, George McGovern, Edward M. Kennedy, Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis and Bill Clinton, the Times also noted.

Many times before, Trump has been chastised for allegedly attempting to distract his supporters from the Russian Federation investigation by pointing fingers at his predecessor, Barack Obama, and at his former election opponent, Hillary Clinton.

John and Tony Podesta founded the Podesta Group together in 1988.

Why is he being investigated?

Podesta announced his decision to leave The Podesta Group during a firm-wide meeting Monday morning and is alerting clients of his impending departure, Politico reported. The Podesta Group joined Manafort's efforts in Ukraine, but maintains it believed the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine wasn't tied to a political party.

As part of that effort, in 2012 the two firms were hired to lobby for a Brussels-based nonprofit called the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine.

"The Podesta Group has fully cooperated with the special counsel's office and taken every possible step to provide documentation that confirms compliance with the law", a spokesperson for the Podesta Group told ABC News.

Though their work ended in 2014, the firms only registered with the Justice Department this year.

It's the latter that has caused issues for Podesta in relation to the probe by special counsel Robert Mueller. Manafort turned himself in to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday, after being indicted on 12 counts, among which were "conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts". It subsequently amended its required filings.

Trump did not say what specifically he thinks Podesta knows or how it affects the special prosecutor's case. The Podesta Group's work for ECFMU, a nonprofit, was in support of Ukraine's admission to the European Union, a position supported by foreign policy experts at the time.

Interestingly, many of these charges could also be applied to Podesta.

Some felt more attention on Podesta was warranted and important.

Others seized on the notion that people on both sides of the political spectrum were in the spotlight.
