The episode began around 3:30 p.m., the North Carolina Department of Public Safety said, when inmates set fire to the prison's sewing plant and several tried to flee.

North Carolina Department of Public Safety tweeted Thursday afternoon that there was an "attempted escape at Pasquotank Cl in Elizabeth City".

Smith was a correctional officer at the prison's sewing plant, where Darden trained inmates making safety vests and other embroidered items, according to officials.

The prison houses almost 900 adult, male felons in both high-security and minimum-custody buildings. Minimum-security prisoners work outside the walls on road gangs for the county recycling department and performing other community labor. He added that to his knowledge, no one escaped from the prison.

"Those who work in our prisons do a hard and demanding job that is critical to our safety". Several employees injured. More info when available.

Andy Cohen Replaces Kathy Griffin as CNN New Year's Eve Co-Host
Prior to the photo shoot, Cooper and Griffin had hosted the New Year's Eve special together for nine years, beginning in 2007. A storm of outraged reaction forced Griffin to apologize for what she said was meant only as a spoof.

Schools in the area reportedly went on lockdown.

Northside Elementary, Elizabeth City Middle School and Pasquotank County High School were all placed on lockdown.

Three of the 10 patients sent to the Sentara Albemarle Medical Center were transferred to the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia, said Sentara Healthcare spokesperson Peter J. Sengenberger in a statement.

Students who are bus riders who have not arrived home as of yet, will be returned to the school until we hear further from Emergency Management.
