Firefighters battle raging fires in Napa, Calistoga

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Director Ken Pimlott say an estimated 20,000 people have been evacuated.

Residents of wine country were sent fleeing from their homes Monday as about 14 wind-driven wildfires burst to life across North Bay counties, wiping out scores of structures and sending the smell of smoke as far as San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. A Hilton Hotel was smoldering and in ruins.

As you can see from the above map, the Atlas fire is particularly intense.

Over $2 billion has been spent by the Forest Service to suppress fires during the 2017 wildfire season, making it the most expensive season ever.

Maureen McGowan was house-sitting for a brother near Kenwood, and said both of the homes on his property were on fire when she left. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in Sonoma, Napa and Yuba counties because of multiple fires in the areas.

"Right now with these conditions we can't get ahead of this fire and do anything about the forward progress", Biermann said. A brush fire broke out in Alameda County in the North Berkeley hills, but firefighters were able to bring it under control. A full list of evacuation centers and road closures is here.

Cal Fire said the Atlas Fire, south of Napa County's Lake Berryessa, had spread across 25,000 acres.

As many as 1,500 structures have been damaged or destroyed in the fires raging across Napa and Sonoma counties.

At least three other fires were burning near Calistoga, a small Napa Valley city known for its wineries, forcing evacuations from homes, shopping centers and hospitals, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office.

"We were sleeping, but we kept smelling smoke". We have very low humidity. The Marin County Sheriff's Department tweeted that they were being overwhelmed about calls due to the smoke. As of Monday morning, firefighters had made no headway containing it.

Patients at a healing center in Sonoma County must be cleared as the blasts seethed on.
